Q.
What is a SPEAKERPHONE?
A. Speakerphone is a special telephone which has a built-in
sensitive microphone and a loudspeaker so that a user can carry
on a conversation without staying near the unit. (An optional
corded headset can be used if privacy is desired).
Q.
Are there any special precautions when using a SPEAKERPHONE?
A. Yes, there are a few things the user needs to know.
A speakerphone offers a simplex voice transmission. That is, when
one person speaks, the other has to listen and vice-versa. If
both try to speak simultaneously, the one who speaks the loudest
will dominate and take control of the voice transmission. Therefore,
it is always a good idea to wait for the other person to finish
talking before answering.
Q.
Can I place a SPEAKERPHONE next to a radio or TV?
A. We do not recommend this because sound from either
a radio or TV can affect the operation. Always place the SPEAKERPHONE
away from any noise source. Place the unit as close to the user
as possible in order to have the best SPEAKERPHONE performance.
Q. Why is it that sometimes I cannot hear the caller's background
noise (cutout)?
A. This is normal, because after you have finished talking
and before the other party answers or speaks, the direction of
voice transmission in the SPEAKERPHONE remains toward the other
party. Consequently, you cannot hear the other party's background
noise. However, after the other party has answered, the voice
transmission direction in the SPEAKERPHONE switches toward you
and you should be able to hear the other party's background noise.
Q.
Why is it that sometimes the first word in a sentence is missing?
A. This is due to the normal switching or simplex transmission
nature of the SPEAKERPHONE as described above. It takes a few
hundred milli-seconds for the SPEAKERPHONE to switch its direction
of transmission. So, if one party answers too fast or speaks too
softly, it is possible that the first word in the first sentence
may be lost during the finite time it takes for the SPEAKERPHONE
to switch direction of voice transmission.
Q. How do I make a call?
A. It is quite simple. The system is activated by pushing
the on/off button, or blowing into air switch or pressing remote.
You then: 1.Dial a number or use memory feature. 2.Press remote
or switch, listen for "beep", press remote or air switch again
- unit will dial operator programmed into M1, ask the operator
for "manual service", and give the desired number. The operator
then dials the number. Upon completion of the call, simply push
the on/off button or press remote to hang up. ( You must be certified
by Long Distance carrier for "Manual Service" from them).
Q.
Is it difficult to install the system?
A. Modular phone cables are used to connect the unit from
the wall outlet to the "line" outlet on the unit. (Please follow
the Operating Instructions for proper connection). It is advisable
to make a test call to ensure that the phone line is properly
connected.
Q.
How does Remote-Control Answering work?
A. It lets a person answer phone calls by using a remote
transmitter (similar to a garage door opener) without touching
the telephone. For an incoming call, push the transmitter once
for about one second to turn on the SPEAKERPHONE. Upon completion
of the conversation, push the button once more for about a second
to turn OFF the system.
Q.
Can other garage door openers interfere with the system?
A. Very unlikely. However, if random ON/OFF interference
does occur, it may be necessary to change the coding of the transmitter
and receiver. CONTACT YOUR PHONE COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE IF ANY
CHANGES ARE NEEDED.
Q. Can the system be activated by accident?
A. Yes, it is possible. If a switch is overly sensitive,
a very slight, unintended motion can activate the system. If that
happens frequently, a switch with less sensitivity should be used.
Or the frequency may need to be changed.
Q. How hard do I have to push the remote button to activate the
system?
A The remote button can be activated easily. However,
under certain circumstances, a switch can be added to the transmitter
unit. This switch can activate the SPEAKERPHONE with minimal force.
Q.
Is a battery required to operate the system?
A. A 12V battery is required for the transmitter and rechargeable
AA for the speakerphone. When the transmitter has difficulty in
turning on the unit it is a good indication that a new battery
is needed. Replacing the transmitter battery every 10-12 months
is a good idea. It is suggested that you use alkaline batteries.
Q. Why does my power light flicker? what does it mean?
A. The power supply to the unit is intermittent. Replace
AC adapter at N/lC - AC adapter plug may be too loose. The flicker
of the remote control transmitter LED is normal and is not an
indication of a problem.
Q. If I don't have the use of my arms or hands, how can the phone
work for me?
A. You can activate the phone and its features by using
the Air Switch or Pillow Switch. Either one of these switches
can be plugged into the phone or remote.
Q. Do I have to call the operator every time I want to make a
call?
A. Not necessarily. If you program numbers into all 20
memory buttons, you can press the remote to turn on the phone
and activate the scanning feature, thus, allowing you to choose
whatever number you want to call. As the phone scans each number,
it lights up and beeps. When it reaches the number you want, just
press remote or blow into air switch or press pillow switch and
number will be automatically dialed.
Q. I cannot start the scanning process:
A. Verify that the scanning feature is turned on. Press
PROG, then press the 1 key, then press SCAN button. If the light
flashes, then you turned the scanning feature on.
Q. My Dialogue RC scans too fast. Can I slow down the scanning
process?
A. If you have the RC-200, yes. Simply follow the chart
on page 5 of the operating manual. For example, if you want 3
seconds gap in the scanning process, press PROG, then 5, then
SCAN
Q.
Can I put Alkaline batteries in my console?
A. No, never. Only use NiCad rechargeable batteries in
your console. Any other battery would damage your product.
Q. If there is a power outage or if I unplug my Dialogue RC for
a while, will I lose the memories I programmed?
A. No. the numbers you have programmed will stay in the
memories for the product lifetime. You can reprogram new numbers
in the memories though.
Q.
Should I program 911 in the first memory?
A. We don't recommend you program 911 in any of the memories.
We recommend you program 0 (operator) in the first memory though
(already programmed when you receive your unit). It will allow
you to reach the operator easily to dial a number you have not
programmed in any memory.
Q.
How long do the remote control batteries last? How do I know it's
time to change them?
A. The remote control batteries last 6 to 12 months on
average. You will know it's time to change them when the light
on the remote starts to blink or is off.
Q.
How long can the console last with the back up batteries?
A. 3 hours on average
Q. People I call seem to have hard time hearing me. What can I
do?
A. 1.Place console closer. 2.Use lapel microphone.
Q.
People seem to have trouble hearing me when I use the headset.
What can I do?
A. Try adjusting the microphone closer to you. If this
is an ongoing problem, please contact our office. We will be glad
to assist you
Q.
I use the headset and I cannot hear people. Is my headset broken?
A. No. Just turn the headset on by pressing the button
"Headset". A light will indicate you that the headset is on and
that the speaker of the phone is off.
Q.
If I use the headset, can I answer call by voice activation?
A. Yes. Say Hello in between the rings in to the headset
microphone and it will pick up the call.
